Endocrine Surgery

DSG specialises in the diagnosis and management of conditions involving the adrenals, thyroids, parathyroids and the surgical management of both benign and malignant endocrine conditions. This includes Graves disease, thyroid nodules and multi-nodular goitre, Hashimoto's thyroiditis, thyroid cancer, lymph nodes, hyperparathyroidism and adrenal lesions.

Dr Hazel Serrao-Brown specialises in minimally invasive adrenal surgery, offering both retroperitoneal and laparoscopic transperitoneal approaches.

Upper GI Surgery

Upper gastrointestinal (Upper GI) surgery focuses on conditions affecting the oesophagus, stomach, liver, pancreas and biliary system, ranging from benign disorders to complex cancers.

 

Dr James Fergusson is a laparoscopic and hepatobiliary surgeon with subspecialty training in Upper GI surgery, including fellowship experience in Oxford, and has been practising as a consultant since 2005 .

 

His Upper GI practice encompasses both minimally invasive (laparoscopic) and open procedures, including gallbladder removal, hernia repair, liver resections, and complex pancreatic operations such as pancreaticoduodenectomy (Whipple’s procedure) and distal pancreatectomy . He is also involved in the surgical management of gastrointestinal and hepatopancreatobiliary cancers, working within multidisciplinary teams to deliver coordinated, evidence-based care .

 

His approach integrates advanced imaging, careful operative planning, and both curative and supportive surgical strategies to optimise outcomes across a broad spectrum of Upper GI conditions.

General Surgery

The surgeons at Deakin Specialists Group provide comprehensive general surgical care across a broad range of conditions.

Services include minimally invasive (laparoscopic) and open procedures such as cholecystectomy, hernia repair (inguinal, umbilical and incisional), appendicectomy, haemorrhoid surgery, management of anal fissures and fistulas, pilonidal sinus surgery, and skin lesion and soft tissue excision. Additional procedures include incision and drainage of abscesses, lipoma and cyst excision, abdominal wall reconstruction, adhesiolysis, and minor bowel resections where appropriate.

 

The team also performs diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopy, including gastroscopy and colonoscopy. Care is delivered using contemporary techniques with a focus on efficient, patient-centred management from assessment through to treatment and follow-up.
